Emergency contraception can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex but is more effective if taken in the first 12 hours after unprotected sex. Generally, the sooner emergency contraception is taken, the better. An emergency IUD (coil) can be fitted up to five days after unprotected sex.
Any unprotected sex also puts you at risk of getting a sexually transmitted infection, so you should have a sexual health check-up (screen) as well. You may have no symptoms at all and still have acquired an infection; a check-up is the only way to know for sure.
